At Schnabel, we take pride in creating a family-friendly work culture where strong relationships are built not only between co-workers but also within families. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Fernando and Ivan Ospina, a father-son duo who have both experienced growth and success in their careers at Schnabel.

Meet Fernando Ospina

Fernando Ospina joined Schnabel in September 2000 as part of the Group North Field Team. What began as a temporary six-month trial, quickly turned into a 24-year (and counting) career at Schnabel. Starting as a Superintendent, Fernando later transitioned into a project management role, where he now assists with pre-construction planning for Schnabel’s projects in the Midwest Region.

Meet Ivan Ospina

Ivan Ospina has been with Schnabel for six years. After attending Southern Illinois University for two years, Ivan joined Schnabel during his summer breaks, working on projects alongside his father. It wasn’t long before Ivan was given the opportunity to try drilling, and since then, he has been operating equipment as one of Schnabel’s main jet grout operators for the Group North Field Team.

A Day in the Life of the Ospinas

Though Fernando and Ivan no longer work side-by-side like they used to, their shared experiences have strengthened their bond. Fernando now works out of Schnabel’s regional office in Cary, IL, focusing on pre-construction efforts, while Ivan spends most of his time in the field assisting with jet grouting projects. Despite their different roles, their shared experiences with Schnabel continue to connect them.

What the Ospinas have in Common

Both Fernando and Ivan share a common path, starting out as members of the field team and learning the ropes from Schnabel Foreman, Carmon Smith, who recently retired. Fernando, who first hired his son at the Red Rock Dam Project in Pella, IA, is proud to see him grow in his role as a jet grout operator. Watching his son follow in his footsteps has been a fulfilling experience for Fernando, who is deeply grateful to Schnabel for providing these opportunities.

Projects they’re Proud to Have Worked On Together

The Ospinas are particularly proud of three projects they’ve worked on together:

tiebacks

  1. Red Rock Hydroelectric Facility Project, IA: This was Ivan’s first experience as a laborer, marking the beginning of his career at Schnabel.
  2. IDOT Cedar Falls Project, IA: Short-staffed and without a driller as the project neared completion, Fernando assigned Ivan to drilling duties, where Ivan’s natural talent for the job became apparent.
  3. Amazon CVG Project, KY: This project was during the COVID-19 pandemic and was a significant milestone for both Ospinas—Fernando’s first as a project manager and Ivan’s first as a full-time driller. Despite the challenges of putting together a crew during the pandemic, Schnabel rose to the occasion, and the project was a success.

A Family-Friendly Work Culture that Stands Out

Fernando has always felt at home at Schnabel, thanks to the company’s close-knit environment. Whether in the field or office, he was welcomed like family, building friendships with his team members. The job often required Fernando to be away from home for over 300 days a year, but Schnabel always emphasized the importance of family. Despite the travel, Fernando’s wife, Ivan, and his other children were able to visit him on job sites, allowing them to explore new places together.

Schnabel’s support for work-life balance made it possible for the Ospina family to spend quality time together, even in the midst of demanding projects.
