For over four decades, Jim and Laverne Mathews have been key members of Schnabel’s Group South, contributing their expertise to the success of countless projects. Here’s a closer look at how these brothers began their journey in construction and why Schnabel remains home to them after all these years.

Meet Laverne Mathews

Laverne Mathews is an experienced Foreman/Superintendent for Schnabel’s Group South. His journey with Schnabel began over 40 years ago as a laborer. Today, Laverne’s role involves overseeing his crew’s work and ensuring that every project is completed safely, efficiently, and to the client’s satisfaction.

Meet Jim Mathews

Jim Mathews, a retired Foreman/Superintendent with Schnabel’s Group South, has spent over 40 years supervising projects across his region. His focus, like Laverne’s, was on safety and productivity, managing crews, and coordinating with both general and subcontractors.

How Did They Both End Up Working for Schnabel?

Just after graduating high school. Laverne, who was then working as a butcher in a grocery store, visited a friend in Atlanta and landed a job as a union laborer with Schnabel. A few years later, Jim called Laverne looking for work. Laverne saw an opportunity for his brother with Schnabel. The rest, as they say, is history.

Typical Day of Work for the Brothers

Initially, their roles differed—Jim started as a welder while Laverne took on a superintendent role. Jim’s focus was primarily on welding tasks, while Laverne oversaw various project aspects, maintaining a focus on safety and efficiency. Later on, both brothers served as superintendents. Their day-to-day responsibilities revolved around ensuring their crews had the resources, guidance, and support needed to complete their work safely and according to plan.

How Did Working Together Strengthen their Relationship

Although they each bring unique perspectives and methods to their work, Laverne and Jim have found that working together has strengthened their relationship over the years. They’ve learned to communicate effectively, respect each other’s approaches, and find ways to collaborate for the team’s benefit.

How Schnabel is Different

The Mathews brothers agree that Schnabel is different from other companies in the industry. “Schnabel cares about its team members,” Laverne says. “They go out of their way to make sure their people are taken care of.” Jim, who briefly left Schnabel to work for a competitor, found himself drawn back to the company. He recalls the many opportunities he’s had to leave over the years, but he’s never been able to do it. “Schnabel feels like family,” Jim says. “It’s hard to walk away from that.”
