Soil nailing is a method used to reinforce existing soil or rock by inserting steel tendons into grouted, drilled holes, creating a stable structure. Shotcrete, often reinforced with wire mesh or steel, is applied to the exposed surface to secure the soil between the nails. This technique progresses top-down, with excavations advancing in 4 to 6-foot stages.

Commonly applied for temporary excavation support, constructing permanent retaining walls, and stabilizing landslide-prone areas, soil nailing is an effective technique in diverse soil conditions. A 9,500-square-foot permanent soil nailing wall was constructed for this project to support excavation and function as the final wall for a 200,000-square-foot career and technology training high school facility.

Schnabel designed and constructed both permanent and temporary earth retention systems to support excavations up to 50 feet deep. These systems played a critical role in stabilizing the Beltline pathway, nearby streets, and adjacent residential structures. The retention solutions encompassed 50,000 square feet of soil nail walls.

The drilling on this job was tough – nested cobbles and gravels with some boulders mixed in. We punched it out with multiple drill rigs and a steady supply of tooling. The tough conditions meant our field crews could not have done it without support from our equipment division. They rose to the occasion and kept the machines working and tooled up.
