At Schnabel, we’re proud to highlight the hard work, passion, and expertise of our talented engineers. In honor of National Engineers Week, we’re excited to highlight Construction Manager, Austin Nightenhelser, a dedicated civil engineer who works out of Schnabel’s Cary, IL office and manages construction projects in the Mid-West region.
What Inspired Austin to Become a Civil Engineer?
Austin’s journey into civil engineering was inspired by a goal to help others and improve communities. Being a civil engineer gives Austin many different ways to achieve that goal, whether it be improving infrastructure, designing systems with environmental sustainability and public safety in mind, or even helping build back after natural disasters.
Austin’s Favorite Project
One of Austin’s most fulfilling projects was the Springfield Creek Lift Station in Omaha, NE because Schnabel was able to help our client deliver a product that improves the current wastewater infrastructure in the community and allows for the further development of the area. Another reason is that his team was able to deploy many of Schnabel’s large vertical drilling techniques between drilling secant piles and soil mixing.
Key Skills for a Civil Engineer
In Austin’s experience, the most important skills for a civil engineer are:
- Patience – Building solutions takes time, and patience is key.
- Problem-solving – Engineers must find creative solutions to complex challenges.
- Effective communication – Clear communication is essential for team collaboration and successful project delivery.
If Austin Weren’t a Civil Engineer…
Austin would have pursued becoming an astronaut instead of a civil engineer.
Advice for Future Engineers
“Get in the field and watch how things are built. It’s the fastest way to gain experience and helps you create better designs and better construction plans.”
