Shotcrete is a specialized concrete mix applied pneumatically onto vertical or sloped surfaces, often combined with soil nails to create a secure and effective earth-retaining system.
A top-tier geostructural design and construction contractor, Schnabel has the knowledge and skill to provide long-lasting shotcrete retaining walls tailored to your construction project needs.
EXPERT SHOTCRETE SOLUTIONS
Shotcrete is a type of low-slump concrete that is pneumatically applied by blowing it onto surfaces with compressed air. This material features a low water-to-cement ratio, high cement content, and typically small aggregate sizes, often no larger than pea gravel. Shotcrete can achieve high compressive strengths, often over 5,000 psi. Its adhesive quality enables it to adhere to vertical and even overhead surfaces without requiring formwork. With effective quality control, a wall surface can be built up to 8 inches thick or more in a single pass.
As an experienced shotcrete contractor, Schnabel commonly uses shotcrete to create both temporary and permanent facings on soil nail retention walls, although it’s also suitable for other types of earth-retaining walls. For soil nail walls, a temporary layer of shotcrete between 4 to 6 inches thick is applied directly onto the excavated surface. For a permanent structure, an additional 6 to 12 inches of reinforced shotcrete is applied after installing the soil nails and initial shotcrete layer. The final surface of the permanent facing can be customized with finishes ranging from sculpted and stained to gun-finished or troweled, offering a look similar to traditional formed concrete walls.

SHOTCRETE SUCCESS STORIES
760 Ralph McGill Blvd | Atlanta, GA
Brasfield & Gorrie, the general contractor for the 760 Ralph McGill Blvd project, brought in Schnabel to install a long-lasting excavation shoring system and multiple shotcrete foundation walls to support the development of a large underground parking garage with 1,250 spaces. Schnabel’s scope of work included the installation of over 100,000 square feet of permanent soil nail, rock bolt, and tieback shoring systems, along with more than 72,000 square feet of permanent shotcrete foundation walls.
Riverfront Place | Columbus, GA
Schnabel was engaged by general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie to deliver excavation support and permanent shotcrete walls for the Riverfront Place project, a key component in constructing a 5-story building and a 7-story commercial office space. By the end of the project, approximately 39,000 square feet of shotcrete were installed.
The 725 Ponce project was one of the first projects in Atlanta where Schnabel installed permanent shotcrete walls for the below grade basement of the structure. The basement are typically cast-in-place concrete, however, on this project the shotcrete system proposed by Schnabel improved the overall project budget and schedule.
