Soil Nail Construction Companies
As a leader in Geostructural Design and Construction, Schnabel provides dependable soil nailing solutions to ensure stable excavation support, even in demanding conditions.
Soil Nailing is a technique that incorporates passive elements, or nails, along with a layer of pneumatically applied shotcrete, to strengthen soils in place. When conditions are favorable, soil nailing frequently proves to be the fastest and most economical choice for excavation support.
With expertise in earth retention and specialized foundations, Schnabel is equipped to guide you in selecting the best support solution for your project.
GROUND STABILITY SOLUTIONS THROUGH SOIL NAILING
Soil nailing is a method used to reinforce existing soil or rock by inserting steel tendons into grouted, drilled holes, creating a stable structure. Shotcrete, often reinforced with wire mesh or steel, is applied to the exposed surface to secure the soil between the nails. This technique progresses top-down, with excavations advancing in 4 to 6-foot stages.
Commonly applied for temporary excavation support, constructing permanent retaining walls, and stabilizing landslide-prone areas, soil nailing is an effective technique in diverse soil conditions. Schnabel, a leading soil nail construction companies in the U.S., has implemented this method successfully in various settings. However, soil nailing is unsuitable for cohesionless soils, organic soils, or excavations below the water table.
Soil nail walls are built using compact, easily mobilized equipment, requiring minimal steel fabrication, which reduces startup time and makes this method ideal for confined sites.
Additionally, soil nailing is effective where height restrictions apply, such as near bridge abutments or beneath power lines, since no vertical elements are necessary. Compared to tiebacks, soil nails are typically shorter for the same excavation depth, making them preferable in limited right-of-way or property spaces. In suitable soil and groundwater conditions, soil nail walls can be installed faster and more cost-effectively than other retaining wall systems.
As a top expert in soil nailing across the nation, Schnabel has constructed dependable soil nail walls in a variety of soil conditions. While effective in many settings, soil nailing is typically unsuitable for cohesionless soils, organic soils, or excavations below the water table.

SOIL NAILING PROJECT EXAMPLES
725 Ponce | Atlanta, GA
Schnabel designed and constructed both permanent and temporary earth retention systems to support excavations up to 50 feet deep. These systems played a critical role in stabilizing the Beltline pathway, nearby streets, and adjacent residential structures. The retention solutions encompassed 50,000 square feet of soil nail walls.
The drilling on this job was tough – nested cobbles and gravels with some boulders mixed in. We punched it out with multiple drill rigs and a steady supply of tooling. The tough conditions meant our field crews could not have done it without support from our equipment division. They rose to the occasion and kept the machines working and tooled up.
