At Schnabel, we are proud to foster a family-friendly work culture that promotes strong relationships among co-workers and within families. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Mario Martinez and Mario Gijon, a father-son duo who have found growth and success in their careers at Schnabel.

Meet Mario Martinez

Mario Sr. has been a dedicated member of Schnabel for over 20 years, primarily working as a laborer with the Group South Team. His specialized skills as a shotcrete nozzleman have made him a key player in Schnabel’s shotcrete projects. He contributed to several important projects, including the 725 Ponce de Leon project, where 50,000 square feet of shotcrete was installed, and the 760 Ralph McGill Blvd project, with 82,000 square feet installed. Additionally, Mario Sr. has taken on a leadership role, often organizing the crew and overseeing various tasks for Group South.

Meet Mario Gijon

Mario Jr. rejoined Schnabel two years ago and has since been learning various labor tasks. From lagging and hanging wire mesh on soil nail jobs to running shotcrete pumps and mixing grout, Mario Jr. has become a skilled and dependable team member. His growth has been most evident in his role as a grout plant operator, where he has taken charge of the mixing operations on Schnabel’s NC-143 highway project for NCDOT in Robbinsville, NC. Currently, Mario Jr.’s primary title is laborer/grout plant operator, and he is continuing to expand his skills.

A Day in the Life of the Martinez-Gijon Duo

Though no two days are the same for this father-son team, most mornings begin with a planning meeting where they discuss the day’s tasks. Afterward, Mario Sr. often takes the lead on shotcrete installation, while Mario Jr. focuses on mixing grout and performing various labor tasks. They do a great job of complementing each other’s skills on the job site.

How Did They Both End Up Working for Schnabel?

Mario Sr. recalls how Mario Jr. always expressed an interest in working at Schnabel. While Mario Jr. was working at a restaurant, he wasn’t satisfied with the pay and knew that the construction industry offered better opportunities. When the chance arose to join Schnabel, Mario Jr. was quick to take it, following in his father’s footsteps.

Projects they’re Proud to Have Worked On Together

One standout project for Mario Sr. was the Amazon Project in Atlanta, GA. Not only did Mario Jr. work alongside him, but his other son was also part of the crew. This made the experience all the more special, as Mario Sr. had the unique opportunity to work with both of his sons. On top of that, Mario Sr. was given the responsibility of overseeing the crew, which added an extra sense of pride to the accomplishment.

What Makes Schnabel Different from Other Companies?

For Mario Sr., Schnabel stands out from other construction companies because of the way they treat their employees. He frequently hears from others in the industry about companies that don’t compensate well or treat their workers poorly. However, in his 20 years with Schnabel, Mario Sr. feels the company has treated him well.
