At Schnabel, we’re proud to highlight the hard work, passion, and expertise of our talented engineers. In honor of National Engineers Week, we’re excited to highlight  Project Manager, Operations, Peter Zelkowski, Ph.D, a talented civil engineer who works out of Schnabel’s Denver, CO office and oversees the day-to-day operations of construction projects in the Western region.

What Inspired Peter to Become a Civil Engineer?

Growing up in a family of trade workers, Peter was always surrounded by construction. With his father and many relatives working in the industry, Peter developed a deep appreciation for it. His passion for STEM subjects in school naturally led him to civil engineering, where he could apply his problem-solving skills to projects that he truly enjoys.

Peter’s Favorite Project

One of Peter’s most memorable projects was the Counter Drive LS improvements project. The team faced unique challenges, particularly with extremely limited access. Assembling large equipment, like the Bauer BG28, in such a tight space required creative problem-solving and meticulous planning. This project stands out as an example of overcoming challenges and successfully navigating complex, confined spaces.

Key Skills for a Civil Engineer

Peter believes that the key to being a successful civil engineer lies in a few crucial skills:

  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring accuracy in every aspect of a project.
  • Adaptability: Being flexible and able to handle any situation that arises.
  • Problem-Solving: Tackling challenges creatively both in the field and during the design phase.
  • Critical Thinking: Taking a big-picture approach while being thorough and checking your own work.

If Peter Weren’t a Civil Engineer…

Peter always had a love for the outdoors. If he weren’t a civil engineer, he’d likely pursue a career in wildlife conservation and management. Peter has spent time volunteering in South Africa at Greater Kruger National Park, contributing to habitat preservation. This experience only deepened his passion for conservation and reinforced his love for nature.

Advice for Future Engineers

Peter’s advice for aspiring engineers:

  • Understand the Core Problem: Focus on the fundamentals and the problem you’re solving.
  • Collaborate and Listen: Work well in teams, embrace different perspectives, and value others’ ideas.
  • Stay Flexible: Engineering often involves challenges. Be ready to adapt and find creative solutions.
